New Media and Identity Construction

“Your online identity in the future is unlikely to be a simple Facebook page; instead it will be a constellation of profiles, from every online activity.” ------ Eric Schmidt, Google chairman.

Internet and new media has significantly impact our daily lives including how we interact with one another and the world around us. Today, news media and social media sites has become a trend. Even for the people who are not actively using social media sites also cannot avoid noticing its everyday presence. The social media site has been rapidly adopted by people and it worldwide use as a new communication tools and a new way of socializing.

Through using social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram, we can express our feeling, sharing our interest and also follow the person or page which like. However, did you realise that these online behaviour are giving great impact to the concept of identity? Or did you know that your social media online news feed does not quite measure up your friends’ real identity through his or her status updates?
The social media identity vs. the reality.
Whether we realize it or not, the concept of identity which we are developing with the use of social media sites does not really reflect the reality of “us”. How we know what ways we should construct our identity in social media? We should construct an identity that is either completely true to ourselves, or is in fact a different identity that we want to project to the outside world?

What we need to do is to begin to understand that identity construction in social media sites is not a bad thing. Therefore, we should be wise while sharing emotion, posting information and uploading photos or video in social media sites. That would affect others’ perception towards you and it also have the implication on your identity constructions.

So, when we post or share something in social media sites, we need to ask ourselves three questions which How, How and What.
1.                  Why I post or share this status?
2.                  How others perceive toward me while saw this post or share?
3.                  What the implication of this post or share on my identity construction?

Lastly, have a look at this short video which explain how people construct their identity in new media. Have fun!

  2. I agreed that nowadays Facebook or Twitter are not longer a simple page but it is a constellation of our profiles. What we posted and shared on social media will affect how people perceived us. In other words, we are now branding ourselves on social media. If everyday what we shared or discussed is all about games, so we actually are branding ourselves as a games addicter or otherwise. So, i think that the solution that had suggested in this blog which is " start with why?" is quite helpful. We really should start with why and think twice before we post or share anything as this will affect other perceptions toward us.

  3. According to analysis, people with low-esteem user are pay more attention to what other user comment about them whereas high-esteem user are more likely to expose their own personal identity on social media such as Facebook in order to increase their popularity and social media friends. Both type of user agreed that social media is a popular channel to construct their own self identity. For example, high esteem people like to post their outfit of the day (OOTD) and foods to construct themselves as outgoing person and attract people who have same hobby to join them. On the other hand, low esteem people tend to post emotional post to attract other people concern about them, so called sense of belonging.

  4. Eric Schmidt was proposed a good point- "new media is actually shaping our identity". For a simple example, we will make assumption about personality of someone through their posting on internet, and also it will be the same for others perceived on us. Therefore, we should always consider about the consequences before our sharing or posting. Self-expression is no wrong, but at the meantime we should always remind a concept that self-expression is self-constructed image of others toward us.

  5. How often we use social media without realizing that social media constructed our self identity without our consciousness. Paradoxically, without much consciousness, we have use social media to strive for approval from our social world. Some of the users, in order to be perceived as an outgoing person, they will post and update others with many pictures of going out and activities they had. Or, they use explicit photos to seek attention from their social world, so they are perceived as hot and sexy.
All in all, these are the unintended consequences of using this emerging technologies and they can be the silent killers of our personality.

  6. I don't think the identity in social media is the real identity. In contrast, it is a constructed identity. People tends to construct their identity with the ideal identity. Selfie is a good example to construct identity. Before taking selfie, most people will tidy up their outfit, hairs and make up. Because they want to build up a good image and impression for the others. They want people to look at them in the way they wish to. When they are posting a selfie, they are trying to say "this is how I want to be portrayed".
I believe most people want to build up a positive image for others. However, the action for trying to build up the image does not reveal the real identity. Instead of trying to pretend someone in social media, why not to be the true self? Show them who you really are instead of the constructed or ideal you.

  7. i agreed with Teh Hui Fang on the statement of people tends to construct their identity with the ideal identity. Most of the people wants to portray the positive or ideal image to others especially in social media. They wants to create a good impression . in facts, it is too differ from the reality. No one would want negative impression. there's always questioned about creating the ideal identity or be yourself, if you can choose, which one would u prefer?

  8. I agreed with the new media are shaping our identity and it construct the way of people perceived ourselves. For certain, everyone wants have a positive image for themselves. Hence, the identity construction in social media are very important. The posts, status, photographs even a video which you uploaded on social media sites will shaping your identity. Therefore, before post anything in social media, you should consider what is the impact that will be imposed towards yourself. Think wisely before you post!

  9. In my opinion, the identity of us in social media are not real. We don't get used to reveal the real of us. We afraid of rejected by other people when we reveal our real identity. Therefore, we always try to shows and construct the ideal identity to others by creating positive image and make people feel like it's just perfect. However, we need to think wisely before we construct an identity which differ from us because people wish to get to know the real of us just like we do.
